Which is better? Dryer sheets or fabric softener?
Everyone loves the smell of fresh laundry. Have you ever hung your laundry outside and it dried by the warm sun and soft breeze? The smell freshens a room like nothing else. Take a walk down the aisle of detergents at your favorite grocery store and you’ll find enticing names such as ‘fresh lavender’ or ‘ocean mist’ that attempt to mimic the freshness. What the companies don’t tell you is that there are toxic chemicals in the detergents, dryer sheets, and they are also emitted into the environment through your dryer vent. A study at the University of Washington showed that many toxic chemicals were not even listed on the labels. The Scientific American website recommended to not use dryer sheets or liquid fabric softener because they both have some of the most harmful ingredients. They include benzyl acetate (linked to pancreatic cancer), benzyl alcohol (an upper respiratory tract irritant), ethanol (linked to central nervous system disorders), limonene (a known carcinogen) and chloroform (a neurotoxin and carcinogen), among others.

If you miss having a scent, there are several things you can do. Also, you can place a few drops of essential oils into the dryer balls. The dryer balls fluff your laundry, prevent static electricity, and reduce drying time.
